Many like me think of multimedia more like a hobby rather than a career, but there are many careers out there in the multimedia field, and not all have to do with taking pictures. Careers like a professional blogger or podcaster, page layout worker, graphic designer, film and video editor, photographer, camera operator, web developer, sketch artist and even news reporters are all careers that fall under the multimedia category.
Personally I am most interested in the Camera operator career. I imagine myself holding a big camera trying to film an action scene of a movie. I have always wanted to know how movies are filmed so this would be an amazing career.
So what does a Camera Operator do? They are the ones who film movies, new shows, tv shows, and documentaries. But it's more complex than just holding up a camera, they must be able to think creatively and collaborate with the team of the production to find creative ways to make the project come to life, whether that involves mounting a camera onto a crane or running alongside the characters. Camera operators must be attentive to details and be able to notice when something needs to be changed or is wrong. They also must be able to move around a lot and be able to maintain the camera equipment.
A program that could be use-full to pursue this career is a photographic, film and video technology program, which can be finished in a year or two depending on the school you attend. You can find this program in many Washington colleges such as Seattle Central college, Clover Park Technical College, Peninsula College, and Skagit Valley College. You would also need a bachelor's degree in camera operation or videography. You could get this degree in the University of Washington, Eastern Washington University or at Washington State University and many other universities.
The average yearly wage for a camera operator here in Washington state is $60,092, about 28.90 an hour. Although this does not mean that you will be making 60,000 dollars a year, some make more because of long time projects and others make much less, in this job it really depends on the amount of projects you are doing and who you are working for.
Overall I feel like if I had to pick a job that fit into the Multimedia category I would probably pick this one, Camera Operator, it seems like it can be very fun and cool to see my work in a movie or show.
I have attached a picture of my mini Polaroid camera, since its the closest thing I have to a real camera ( other than my phone) which is needed to be a Camera Operator.
